Jankiel Adler's drawings exhibition (18th December 2013 - 17th January 2014)

event-date: 08.01.2014

We would like to invite you to the exhibition of Jankiel Adler's drawings, who was one the most extraordinary Polish artists of the 20th century. Affiliated to the ‘Ing Idisz' group, he was a professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf and renowned painter in Germany before the National Socialists came to power. His relationship with Poland remained strong all the time, and he had exhibitions in that country in the 1930s. Later on, he lived in France and England. In 1940, being 45 years old and having a heart condition, he volunteered to the Polish Army in France, and after the fall of Dunkerque he followed his artillery unit on its evacuation to Scotland. Following his demobilisation, he became a full-time painter, gaining a great renown in England. His art influenced a whole generation of British painters, and his works were exhibited in the most prestigious galleries in London, Paris and New York. The person who donated his drawings to the Jagiellonian University and the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń is David Aukin, a British lawyer, director, theatrical and movie producer, an Academy Award nominee i.a. for The Madness of King George and Secrets & Lies, winner of the Golden Palmtree Award in Cannes. The collection of Jankiel's drawings and pictures was bequeathed to him by his father, who as a lawyer was friend to the painter, but he received some other works from Adler's daughter too. Mr. Aukin made a commitment to popularize the work of Adler and donated a large portion of his works to large museums in Great Britain, USA, France and Germany.

The exhibition will be open from Monday to Saturday 11:00-15:00, free entry.
