International scientific conference: 'Universitätsstudium und Gesellschaft in Mitteleuropa vom 15. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert'

We invite you to participate in the international scientific conference: ‘Academic education of social and professional groups in the 15-18th century Central Europe. Universitätsstudium und Gesellschaft in Mitteleuropa vom 15. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert.' which is to take place in Cracow in Collegium Maius on the 19-20th November 2015.

The conference was organised by the Jagiellonian University Archive and the Jagiellonian University Museum. The event was held under the patronage of the President of Cracow Prof. Jacek Majchrowski and the Rector of the Jagiellonian University HM Prof. Wojciech Nowak.

The program encompasses three main topics:

  • the summary of research projects and work concerning the Central European academic history;
  • the studies on the position, role, and careers made by persons with academic education in the historical societies of Central Europe based on selected social and professional groups;
  • the prosographical, electronic, academic databases as a modern research tool; presentations of currently active projects, including the project realised by the JU Faculty of History in cooperation with the AGH Chair of Telecommunication named ‘Corpus academicum Cracoviense. Electronic Database of Students and Professors of the Cracow University in the Old Polish period 1364-1780', financed by the National Programme for the Development of Humanities.

The conference was a next step in the academic cooperation established in 2011 between the Jagiellonian University Archive, the Friedrich-Schiller Universität, and the Univerzita Karlova in Prague. At that time, the Polish-German-Czech research group ‘City-University-Religiosity' was founded with the goal of researching the municipal, intellectual and religious elites in the Medieval and early Modern ages. The Polish side focuses its research on the Cracow University and the city of Cracow. The group works in a biannual cycle: the first conference took place in Jena in 2011, the second one in Prague in 2013. The goal of the meeting in Cracow is to deepen the cooperation, expand it to other Central European countries, undertake new research topics and spread the knowledge about modern questionnaires and working methods in academic prosopography.

The conference languages are English and German. There 19 planned papers, including 10 read by the guests from abroad: the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, and Switzerland. The full programme is available below.
