Lecture: ‘In search of Native American past. Polish archaeological project in Colorado, USA'

The Polish archaeological project has been conducted by the researchers from the Institute of Archaeology, Jagiellonian University in the ancient Pueblo settlements from the 13th century, located in a few canyons in Colorado in the North American Southwest. The project focuses on the study of the settlement structure and socio-cultural changes that took place among the Pueblo natives and eventually caused the abandonment of the area and unexplained migration towards present-day Arizona and New Mexico near the end of the 13th century.

The exhibition presents a collection of pictures from the five seasons of the project, conducted on thirty sites with well preserved stone architecture of the Pueblo culture. The Polish team also discovered the previously unknown examples of Nawaho, Ute, and Pueblo rock art, including paintings and petroglyphs depicting shamans, warrior, scenes of bison hunting, and clan symbols.

The lecture will present the summary of the works of Polish researchers presented on boards and pictures, as well as the most significant results of the project. Pottery fragments and silicon artifacts from the project area which were donated to the JU Institute of Archeology by the Anasazi Heritage Center museum in 2014.
