Programme of the Małopolska Night of Scientists in the JU Museum

Take part in the Małopolska Night of Museums in the Jagiellonian University Museum on 28 September, 2018, 18:00 – 22:00.

1. Exhibition  „Sciences New and Old”, entry at 18:00, 19:00, 20:00, 21:00.

The interactive exhibition gives the visitor a chance to carry out experiments illustrating certain questions concerning physics (wave motion), mathematics (calculating instruments), and astronomy (measurement used to establish coordinates of the celestial sphere – measurement of time and angles).

2. Exhibition „Draw your sabres! Sabre fencing as Polish national heritage, entry at 18:00, 19:00, 20:00, 21:00.

The exhibition covers the subject of civic education with its origins in the 18th-century School of Chivalry and Collegium Nobilium, duels, but mostly the Polish traditional techniques of sabre fencing. It also demonstrates the differences between fighting, military and sport sabre. Visitors can learn about historical development of fencing techniques and the position of Polish sabre school between the Oriental sabre and the West European sword. The exhibition also includes interactive and multimedia stations.

 

3. Display of historical sabre fencing at 19:15 in the JU Museum courtyard - may be called off due to bad weather.


The displayed will be carried out by the Silkfencing Team with the assistance of the Cracow Fencing School. Both institutions cooperated with the Museum to create the fencing exhibition. As groups dedicated to HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts), they consist of history and martial arts enthusiasts, as well as specialists of different kind who use a well-thought content and specialist research to recreate historical forms of training and techniques of melee fighting. An important part of their mission is to verify the theory in tournaments and duels. Through their efforts, such associations make the legacy of old masters and warriors from the past available to the public.

 

4. Historical sabre fencing workshop at 18:15.
The workshop will be organised by the Silkfencing Team. Participants will use wooden fencing sticks to learn basic sabre techniques

5. “Colours” and “Painting with light” workshops at  20:00 i 21:00.

The workshops are based on experiments carried out by the Museum staff or by the participants on their own. The aim is to explain questions concerning colours, including colour formation and colourful shadows. As the final part of the workshop, participants will create light paintings.
 

6. “Kaleidoscope” workshops at 18:00 and 19:00.

The participants will create their own kaleidoscopes and take them home. As the final part of the workshop, participants will create light paintings.
