On Friday, August the 26th, the gallery courtyard of Collegium Maius will be inaccessible

Traditionally, the 26th July is celebrated  as the day on which the royal charter re-establishing the University was issued by King Władysław Jagiełło in 1400. Common meals attended by distinguished scholars, professors, by persons connected to the University and those who have made significant contributions to it, are just a pretext for the meeting of intellectuals, for interesting conversations, exchanges of opinion, but also for discourse after a lecture delivered specifically for the occasion. In recent years, the professorial breakfast lectures have been conducted by  Prof. Jacek Purchla Ph.D. ‘Heritage and development. The Cracow experience,' Prof. Adam Strzałkowski Ph.D. ‘Physics as a window on the world,' Prof. Adam Zając Ph.D. ‘Polish flowers,' Prof. Jacek Popiel ‘On the Polish language.'

The culinary side of the breakfasts is the domain of Cracow's restaurants, which using historical recipes found in old books serve meals similar to those eaten  by professors centuries ago. Although the food served on the tables appears to be simple, like honey from mountain apiaries, fresh preserves, turnip with garlic, herb-spiced cottage cheese, ring-shaped cheese cakes, fruit and naturally aromatic cottage loaves,  all the dishes are made using extraordinary culinary skill. Although the present-day breakfasts are way more modest than the meals enjoyed by scholars in the past – as can be confirmed in corresponding passages of historical documents – such meetings are still of great relevance, their essence being lectures and the subsequent discourse amongst the academic elite.
