Naming event in the Huta Courtyard

On 29th October 2014, Collegium Maius was the place of the naming event of the Huta Courtyard and opening of the "Fifty years of Jagiellonian University Museum's activity in Collegium Maius – snapshots" exhibition. A half century after the opening of the Jagiellonian University Museum, the academic community commemorated Prof. Karol Estreicher, a distinguished art historian, famous for his contribution to Polish culture and the University. Thanks to his efforts the Collegium Maius edifice was renewed after the Second World War, and museum rooms were arranged in its interiors. The professor held the office of museum director until 1976. The Huta Courtyard, located next to Św. Anny Street (between Collegium Maius and Collegium Medicum) was renamed to the Estreicher's Corner. Among the guests attending the event were the University Vice-rectors: Prof. Stanisław Kistryn, Andrzej Mania and Jacek Popiel, as well as the former Rector, Prof. Franciszek Ziejka, and the former Museum Director, Prof. Stanisław Waltoś. The meeting was hosted by the current Director, Prof. Krzysztof Stopka. The meeting included acknowledgments towards Prof. Karol Badyna from the Cracow's Academy of Fine Arts for creation and donation of sculptures, which are currently exhibited in the Estreicher's Corner. His works represent King Kasimir the Great, Pope John Pope II, Father Józef Tischner, Prof. Julian Aleksandrowicz and Prof. Antoni Kępiński, as well as Prof. Karol Estreicher Jr. Other regards were directed at the "Słodki Wierzynek" restaurant, which had provided sweet refreshments.

Thereafter participants moved to the "U Kazimierza" room in the Collegium Maius cellars for the opening of a photo exhibition, which illustrates the key moments in history of musem's organization. the development of its collection, new goals and initiatives. The same exhibition also commemorates persons who were linked to the place and institution for many years. The displayed photographs come from the Jagiellonian University Museum and the Cracow's Society of Friends of Fine Arts collections. The additional commentary consists of quotations from the three Museum Directors – Karol Estreicher Jr., Stanisław Waltoś and Krzysztof Stopka.

The exhibition can be visited out of charge until the 31st December.
