Reportage from the Christmas carol concert

On the 13th January in the evening, the Jagiellonian Hall resounded with the words of the oldest Polish carols.

The significant role in the origins of the Polish Christmas carol was presented by Mrs. Dorota Susuł in her introductory speech. The concert, performed by the Jagiellonian University Academic Choir Camerata Jagellonica, the Jagiellonian University Women's Academic Choir conducted by Janusz Wierzgacz, and the Cracow's Jagiellonian University Academic Choir conducted by Oleg Sznicar, was opened with Buccinemus in hac die (Let us play today), the oldest Polish Christmas carol written by Bartłomiej of Jasło, an alumnus and professor of our University at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. The Polish translation of the song from Latin was prepared by Dr Krzysztof Pawłowski and included in the songbook Chwałę Pana wyśpiewajmy (Let Us Sing the Lord's Glory) released on the occasion of the concert. The repertoire also consisted of other songs like Zdrow bądź, krolu anielski, the oldest preserved Polish carol written by Jan Szczekny, the popular and well-known A wczora z wieczora by Jan Żabczyc, a student of the Cracow University, published in the first Polish compilation of Christmas carols titled Symfonie anielskie abo Kolęda mieszkańcom ziemskim od muzyki niebieskiej, wdzięcznym okrzykiem na Dzień Narodzenia Pańskiego zaśpiewane. The first part of the concert was concluded by the surprise prepared by the Jagiellonian University Academic Choir Camerata Jagellonica which performed the song Niemowlątko na słomie from their newest record W Dzień Bożego Narodzenia. To satisfy the tratidion, the second part of the concert became joint carol singing. The numerous audience led by conductor Janusz Wierzgacz stood up to the task and sang the most popular Polish carols together with the choir.
