Take-off of a hot air balloon

event-date: 20.03.2014

The 1st April 2014 marks the 230th anniversary of the first hot air balloon flight in Cracow. This historical experiment was carried out in the Cracow's Botanical Garden by four professors of the University, which at the time was called  Szkoła Główna Koronna (The Crown Main School). Those scholars were Jan Śniadecki, Jan Jaśkiewicz, Jan Szaster and Franciszek Scheidt. The first public flight was the final stage of a series of experiments, which began in January 1784.

The balloon, which rose to the sky on the 1st April, had perimeter of ca. 30 metres and was 9 metres tall. The duration of its first flight was ca. 20 minutes and it reached about 4 kilometres of altitude. To commemorate this historical event, on the 1st April 2014 at 10 a.m.the 19th Cracow Scout Team 'im. Żwirka i Wigury', together with the JU Botanical Garden and the JU Museum, will repeat that experiment in the same location, the Botanical Garden. Replicas of the original balloon in 1:5 scale will be used. Visitors will be also able to see contemporary hot air balloons. The organizers would like to invite all students from Cracow's schools.
